  • Medical assistants make up a group of nearly 500,000 people in the United States who perform administrative tasks that keep medical offices running smoothly. They may answer phones, sort paperwork and perform various clerical tasks. Depending on the training of the individual, he or she may even be qualified to take x-rays or administer shots to patients.

    Most of these medical assistants earn between $25,240 and $29,720 annually with the median annual salary for a medical assistant being $28,300 according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. The highest paid medical assistants were found in hospitals and surgical centers. The salary of a medical assistant may vary based on factors such as location, training, prior experience, skill and the amount of hours worked.

    Most all medical assistants will have at least a high school diploma; however those who have one or two years of training with certification have the best job opportunities and higher salaries. Medical assistants often train at their local community college and take courses such as anatomy and physiology.

    Generally, medical assistants work full-time in a clean Certified Medical Assistant Schoolsoffice environment with other individuals. Depending on the office and the hours it serves patients, a medical assistant may work shifts that differ from the normal eight hour day. Whether or not the assistant works full-time, part-time or overtime can increase or decrease a medical assistant’s pay. The more hours worked, the higher the salary.

    Skill and job performance can also affect the medical assistant’s salary. If the assistant does not do a good job, there is a chance that he or she may not receive raises or may lose employment. Because of the nature of the job, a medical assistant must be professional looking, have good communication skills and always act respectfully to patients. The longer that a medical assistant stays with a company, the better salary and benefits they’ll receive.
